I have MS, so comfortable seats are a must. This is the only car that I've been in where I could do a non-stop trip from Michigan to Washington DC in. No fatigue, no stopping for a stretch. It's that good, and VW throws in standard heated seats for the GTI. And they do mean "heated" seats, not "warmed" seats, not "take-the-edge-off" seats. This little 2.0L hauls. There's nothing better than being able to keep up with the traffic in the fast lane, pull out and instantly whoosh up to speed without having to shift from 6th. It's not the quietest engine at idle a little on the ticky side, but that's high-pressure fuel injection for you. Otherwise this is the most linear, and smoothest turbo-four on the market. More than makes up for the power deficit in it's class with sheer refinement. As for the manual transmission, let's not even go there. Clutch takeup is light, linear if a little vague. The shifter itself is smooth, with positive engagement and an effortless movement. This gearbox rewards fingertip lightness. Rev-matching is almost instinct, as the car is geared perfectly. I love the diesel engine. Its torque is amazing. It pulls strong from 1400rpm to 4500rpm. You never need to downshift to pass on the highway, because at 65mph in 6th gear it's right at the peak torque. The transmission is also smooth and has great gearing for fuel economy and performance. The Turbo Inline 4 in the GTI is an incredibly smooth and responsive engine with a lot of torque all the way across the power band, always leaving the driver with that added punch and acceleration when needed. The 2.0L turbo is a peppy thing in the GTI. The torque curve peaks out early and the lack of really noticeable turbo lag makes for a fairly fun motor, even if it does seem underpowered compared to other hot hatches in the segment. In VW's quest for cabin comfort, there isn't the same engine note you'll hear from other raspy 4-bangers, but the tradeoff is worth it I think. see full Volkswagen Jetta / Golf / GTI review |

The regular Continental all season tires are pretty unimpressive. They have reasonable handling and road feel, but are barely better than summer tires when the temperatures drop below 40 degrees. I have been very impressed with my General Altimax Arctic winter tires though.
