Mar 201270000 miUS $100 | The horn stopped working, almost no sound.
Jul 201275000 miUS $100 | Glow plug module and glow plug harness electrical fault generating a "Check Engine" fault. No running problem, but fault could not be initially cleared by dealer.Further diagnostics required with visits to dealer-in process of final repair.
Aug 201275500 mi | The problem reported in July required additional repair, but the dealer worked with VW to get the appropriate part(s) to make the repair. It was a subtle and hard-to-diagnose issue that was ultimately resolved.
Sep 201276000 miUS $250 | Driveshaft, also called propeller shaft, failed. Vehicle was flatbedded back to the dealer. Driveshaft and centre support bearing were replaced.
Mar 2015103000 miUS $150 | "Flaps" for the A/C and ventilation were "throwing a code" which resulted in the A/C being unavailable. Codes were reset, tested, and A/C now works. Note that A/C was non-functional, but ventilation fans were running correctly.
Jun 2015106000 miUS $85 | Water leaked into the passenger side footwell from the A/C drain system. An independent repair location in Denver checked all drains for all systems, and cleared a blockage for the A/C with approximately 1 L of stopped up water.
Sep 2015107000 miUS $350 | A cracked vacuum line for the brakes had to be replaced - brakes were not dependable. An interim patching repair to minimise leakage was performed while waiting for the correct part to arrive. When the part arrived, the line was replaced.
Jun 2016113000 mi | A/C system has "valves" that direct heat or cold through the ducts. The flapper/"valve" would not re-set for A/C season, so no cold air, despite a properly charged system. Reset was achieved through the computer interface by the dealer.
Dec 2016115000 mi | Engine check light came on - dealer plugged it in, cleared error, could not find root cause of the error. No further issues since then.
Mar 2017117000 miUS $125 | A/C recharge was done in early March and the a "reset" of flapper valves that were in fault mode was required (subject of this note).
Jul 2017120000 miUS $183 | The handle for the parking brake broke off from the connection. The handle is attached asymmetrically to the connector, and as such, would eventually break. A new handle and connection to the cable was required, and was installed by the dealer. _Extremely_ poor design by VW for this part !
Nov 2017121000 mi | Parking brake cable "popped loose" from bracket under dashboard that maintains tension on the cable, leading to parking brake being "stuck". The cable fits into an l-bracket with a slot, the head of that section of the cable being pulled out sufficiently to create tension. It was replaced in the slot, and I am keeping a cable-tie handy in the car if the cable head pops loose again. Extremely annoying, yes, but it also very closely mimics the symptoms of a broken cable, which is a bit more heart-stopping with the car parked a long way from a dealer.
Jan 2018122000 miUS $100 | The transmission coupling for what VW calls the "propeller shaft" began to fail while on a trip. With _very_ careful driving roughly 100 miles, the vehicle reached the dealer. The repair required the complete replacement of the "propeller shaft" and coupling, as VW no longer supports replacement of the coupling alone. If the coupling catastrophically fails, the vehicle is dead-on-the-road, so this was an important repair.
Apr 2018125000 miUS $80 | "Flapper valve" reset - previous entries on this car - was required to anable A/C to work. |
Volkswagen Touareg in California, United States Mar 2011 - Aug 2020

Dec 2013124000 miUS $400 | Warning system reported engine fault every time windshield wipers turned on. Problem isolated to short in windshield wiper stalk. Replacement part ordered but not yet installed. Problem hasn't recurred. Maybe process of troubleshooting fixed short.
Mar 2014127000 miUS $90 | Raspy sound occurs intermittently when under power. Dealer identified a small exhaust leak around exhaust manifold, but would have to remove engine to investigate further. Update: resolved itself.
Dec 2015148000 miUS $70 | Leaking headlight washer assembly. Causes system to lose windshield washer fluid. Part not in stock so not repaired at time of diagnosis.
Dec 2016163000 miUS $700 | Air suspension compressor and associated relay failed.
Jan 2017109300 mi | Subsequent leak on a fitting connection to the new air compressor. Ultimately I fixed it by buffing the end of the hose that is inserted into the quick disconnect. The mechanic didn't notice that the tangs of the quick disconnect had scratched the hose. |
